About Steph

I’m a self-proclaimed horse nerd, with over two decades of riding experience and 8 years of full time study, that has brought me in contact with a variety of equine professionals whose main focus has been correct equine biomechanics, a soft and ethical approach, and developing a deeper bond with our horses. Over the past eight years, I’ve delved into extensive reading and research, exploring various training methods, predominantly drawing inspiration from classical dressage principles and a deep understanding of equine behaviour. I’ve also invested countless hours delving into rider biomechanics and how they intricately influence our horses both mechanically and energetically.

EDUCATION

Bachelor Degree in Equine Studies:

Three-year science degree encompassing everything from equine nutrition, anatomy, physiology  behaviour and critical thinking.

Certificate in Equine Massage and Equine Red Light Therapy:

Equipping me with the expertise to enhance muscle function, motion, gear fit, rider influence, and rehabilitation exercises.

Honors Degree and engaged in PhD research in Functional Anatomy:

I’ve been an active member of Professor Helen Davies Functional Anatomy and Biomechanics Research Group at the University of Melbourne. I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with an incredible network of veterinarians and researchers from Australia and across the globe, gaining invaluable insights into enhancing the functional anatomy of the horse.

As my riding developed I have gathered knowledge and practical skills from a range of different equine professionals who specialise in classical training, movement therapy and in depth knowledge of both human and horse biomechanics.

MY APPROACH

Meet The Team

My job would not be possible without these very important horses so I would like to introduce them. I am very lucky to have two very different horses but one thing they have in common is a huge personality and they provide me with endless joy and entertainment with their hilarious interactions.

Rory I have had since I was 18 and is my soul mate and best friend. We have a very fluid and open dialogue which makes communicating with him a breeze. He is like a painting I have been working on for 15+ years that shows all my mistakes but also all my progress. He is semi-retired now and we do liberty and the odd trail ride.  He has the biggest heart, and incredible capacity to forgive, I don’t think I’m going to have another horse like him in my lifetime.

Bandit is the quirkiest little guy that I never wanted but so badly needed. He somewhat accidently ended up with me during the middle of COVID after being a failed school pony. He has moon blindness which means his vision is slightly impaired and when he arrived he was green, scared of his own farts and had a stressed little body. He was a blank canvas for me to work on and I am so proud of how far he’s come and what I have been able to achieve with my skills and knowledge I now have. Through patience and dedication, I’ve witnessed remarkable growth in his confidence and ability to communicate with me.

Bandit

Breed– Quarter horse X Appy X Australian Stock Horse
Age – Born 2013
Favourite snack– usually whatever Rory is eating, liquorice, carrots, but not apples
Pet hates– new objects he hasn’t seen/sniffed, loud noises, things going over his head, when Rory is too far away from him, bot flies
Favourite scratchy spots– Bum, tummy, behind the elbow
Favourite activities – sleeping, knocking things over or chewing on novel objects, playing with Rory, rummaging through your pockets, nipping your bum, scratchy sessions in the paddock
Funny quirks – So many I would write a book, but my top ones, always has to give you kisses on the face, loves to investigate everything, surprisingly for a blind horse he’s not scared of much, as long as he can go up to it and touch it then it’s no big deal….but god forbid if there is a noise and he can’t see what it is then his little eyeballs basically fall out.

Rory

Breed – Thoroughbred
Age – Born in 1999
Favourite snack – carrots, banana skins, anything I am eating unless it’s celery, or something covered in cheese or yoghurt
Pet hates– Water on his face, stuff touching his nose whiskers (gets the sneezes), not paying enough attention to him
Favourite scratchy spots – Face, neck, between the thighs, under the tail
Favourite activities – meditating in the paddock, adventure trail rides or walks, liberty work/playing, swimming or being near any form of water…unless it’s for a bath.
Funny quirks – Is a total sook (acts like a paper cut is a gaping wound), when he thinks he’s done something special when we are doing liberty work he brings himself in for a treat, will only walk over scary things if I do it first, turns into a dragon if there is a rogue plastic bag or tinsel in his vicinity.
